The day I lost my cousin - Datu Azlan :)

Kota Kinabalu: Datu Azlan Datu Amir Kahar, a son of Banggi Assemblyman Datuk Amir Kahar Tun Mustapha, was found dead in mysterious circumstances with multiple injuries at his fiancee's home, here, Saturday.

Police who have classified the case as murder said the 24-year-old culinary student might have been assaulted with a belt buckle but were not immediately able to determine the cause of death.

Sabah Commissioner of Police, Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said preliminary reports show that Azlan, the third of five siblings, had several wounds on his head, about two centimetres each.

"There was a small quarrel between them (deceased and his fiancee) and he was probably attacked with a belt buckle. But we do not know what caused his death yet that we have to depend on the pathological report," he said.

Azlan's fiancee, said to be a model, was detained when she went to the Karamunsing police station to lodge a report on his death. Statements were also recorded from her parents.

At the Queen Elizabeth Hospital mortuary, family members, close relatives and friends of Azlan came to pay their respects, still shocked at the sudden demise of the culinary student at a college here.

Amir Kahar, who rushed from Kudat after receiving the news from his wife Datin Aminah Ambrose, said the 21-year-old fiancee's mother had informed Aminah that their son had suffered a stroke and that she had rushed him to hospital.

It was learnt Azlan had visited his fiancee's family home in Taman BPL, Bunga Kekwa 1, near the KK High School, the night before.

"But the woman's mother told police later, when lodging a report, that Azlan had suffered self-inflicted injuries," he said, adding his son got engaged last April.

He was perturbed by the contradicting accounts given by the fiancee's mother, adding he saw for himself that Azlan had wounds on the head, multiple injuries on the body, shoulder and arms, and bruises on his thighs.

Amir said the wounds had been cleaned and the body was in fresh clothes when it was brought to the hospital.

"My wife also cannot accept, after seeing Azlan's body at the morgue, that he could have died from a stroke or the thought that the multiple injuries had not done him harm," Amir said.

"He was probably beaten up."

Meanwhile, the fiancee's 47-year-old sister told reporters that Azlan and her sister got engaged in July, the ceremony carried out at her home in Taman Kemayan.

She admitted the couple quarrelled a lot but that it only took them a while to make up. According to her they quarrelled sometime after 10pm on Friday. Azlan took out a belt buckle, she claimed, but the fiancee managed to seize it from him and struck him with it.

But things died down shortly after and they made peace, the fiancee apparently told the sister, adding Azlan later went out and bought food for home.

She said after the meal, Azlan took a rest in a room, and at about 3am went to take a shower. After the shower, he returned to the bedroom but complained he was feeling dizzy and could barely stand.

She reportedly tried helping him and decided not too long after to bring him to the hospital. However Azlan was too heavy for her to carry to the car and she sought help from construction workers who were putting up in a makeshift structure nearby.

It was not clear what took place at that point but it was learnt the body arrived at the morgue at about 7am. Police brought the fiancee back to her home at about noon to reconstruct what happened.

Present at the scene were Deputy Sabah Criminal Investigation Department Head, ACP Ahmad Lofti Khalid, City Crime Officer, DSP Ahmad Asri Jamaluddin, and senior investigating officers ASP Abdul Rozak Muhammad and ASP Noor Azizul Kifli Hj Mansor.

Azlan's uncle (Aminah's brother), Penampang Umno Chief, Datuk John Ambrose said Freddy Sua, CEO of Yayasan Bumiputera Sabah, lodged a police report on behalf of the Amir Kahar family at about 10am at the Karamunsing police station.

He said after seeing Azlan's body, he also could not believe his nephew could have died of natural causes.

"It is not suicide and I do not think it is a stroke," he said, adding there could be three or more injuries on Azlan's head.

"And on his hands, there were lots of puncture marks, black spots all over and there also seemed to be bite marks on the hands.

"But we will leave everything to the police to investigate," he added.

Amir Kahar, who saw Azlan before he left for Kudat on Friday morning, said his son was planning to open a cafe in town.

He also revealed that he sat down with Azlan sometime last week and talked to him about settling down rather than just staying engaged.

"He has been a good son I do not know what happened," he said.

He added Azlan had just this week made fruit juices and milkshakes for the mother to taste, and to be listed in the cafe menu.

Among those who came to the mortuary were former Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat and Bukit Harapan housemother Anne Keyworth.

Azlan's remains were laid to rest at the Tun Mustapha Memorial Park in Putatan later Saturday.
